Project Background McKay Creek Fire: The McKay Creek wildfire (located approximately 11.5 kilometers north of Lillooet along the West Pavilion Road) on the Traditional Territory Ts'kw'aylaxw First Nations' (TFN) Traditional Territory lands was ignited on June 29, 2021. It spread rapidly throughout 44,964.2 hectares during the so-called "heat dome" of 2021. The McKay Creek fire affected the land's natural state, affecting forested areas, natural resources, harvesting resources, wildlife, farmlands and communities near and within the fire zone. TFN is prepared to implement a Territorial Patrol- Morel Mushroom Harvest Program for the McKay Creek Fire Area. The Territorial Patrol- Morel Mushroom Harvest Program intends to reflect the successes of the 2018 Elephant Hill Fire Morel Mushroom Program (EHFMP). TFN is in partnership/collaboration with the Secwepemcùl’ecw Restoration and Stewardship Society (SRSS) and is sponsored by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF).
The Territorial Patrol will be monitoring TFN Traditional Territory. Stations will be set up on both sides of the fire boundary with periodic patrols throughout the fire area. Our intentions are to:
